You may or may not be aware that May 9 is Europe Day.

On May 9 1950, Robert Schuman, the first President of the European Parliamentary Assembly, presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.

This proposal, known as the Schuman Declaration, is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is known as the European Union.

Today, we, the people of Europe, celebrate May 9 as Europe Day. This is an occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and the peoples of the Union closer to one another.

To mark this date, and in view of Bristol’s undeniable European identity, at the invitation of the European Movement Bristol and Bath branch, the Rt Hon Lord May of Bristol, Councillor Faruk Choudhury will raise the EU flag in front of Bristol City Hall.

The event will be attended by Bristol political leaders, Bristol elected members, members of the public and members of the European Movement.

At the same time we will organise a European Movement stall in the Bristol City Hall foyer, distributing free pro-EU literature, and myth-busting pamphlets.

We look forward to seeing you on the day. It’s our Europe, let’s celebrate it together.
