Traffic in Long Street and the Market Place in Devizes could be limited to 20mph if Wiltshire Council takes the advice of the town council.

Town councillors were asked to nominate areas for 20mph limits at the planning meeting tomorrow.

They named Rotherstone, the narrow road past the cemetery used by drivers as a rat run to avoid congestion on New Park Street.

There was less unanimity about 20mph limits in Long Street, St John’s Street, the Market Place and Northgate Street up to Brewery Corner.

Mayor Pete Smith said: “We’ve got to be wary of new road safety measures. There has only been one death from a road traffic collision in recent years.”

Road safety is paramount, however....
This will congest the town even more, rush hour traffic most days leads to a grinding holt. Absolute pain commuting from one end of town to the other, and the people with power okay for planning further homes.
The mind boggles ;0

The article states that the coucil want Long Street and the Market Place to reduce to 20 mph, but the councillors were not agreed.
If we have to spend money in the town, and are being dictated to by Wiltshire Council to spend from a certain pot, then can we please ask the residents of the town.
Maybe the G&H could run a poll on this website?
Lets not slow down the town anymore, we need a bypass and 600 houses on London Road will kill any tourism in this town forever.

What neither the County nor the Town Council seems prepared to admit is that 20mph zones are not enforceable unless sufficient road safety and traffic calming measures have been put in place . Further more DOT says they are not suitable for main roads.

This is just Wiltshire Council pretending to be road safety conscious but refusing to finance it - just as they did in Rowde where they and the Parish Council installed THREE crossings, none of which are controlled, hardly anyone uses and the traffic still has the right of way.

Why were people asked to nominate 20mph areas surely if they are not needed don't have them don't just accept that you have to have them like it or not because someone says you have to two words more common sense......
