A group of young girls celebrated a very special evening when they became the first members of the newly formed Marlborough Rainbows to make their promise.

The group formed in January with eight members who, on Monday evening, promised to do their best, to think about their beliefs and to be kind and helpful.

Rachel Fry, 32, of College Fields, started the group after looking for a unit for her five-year-old step daughter, Poppy Hilliar, to join.

She said: “I started looking and I discovered that there wasn’t one in Marlborough so I thought I could give an hour a week to run one because I’d taught reception class for eight years so I have experience of working with young children.

“I think it’s a nice way to get to know new girls and to learn life skills that you don’t always have time to teach at home, for example next week we are making a hot drink and then taking it outside to the park to drink. I was a Brownie and a Guide when I was little and I loved it.”

Since forming four new members have joined the unit and these girls will make their promise at the end of the term.

“The evening went very well and the girls were all excited,” Miss Fry said.

“Because they are all quite young they said their promise together this time.

“We had the district commissioner, Wendy Beattie, with us and she gave the girls their promise badge and certificate and then afterwards we had tea and cake.”

The unit meets every Monday during term time at Manton Village hall between 5pm and 6pm.
