Work to electrify the Great Western Railway will affect residents in Lyneham, with plans to close two bridges on major routes out of the village later this year.

The bridge at Dauntsey Lock on the B4069, which connects Lyneham to the M4 at Chippenham, will close for five months from March.

After this Skew Bridge, on the A3102 leading south out of Royal Wootton Bassett, will be closed for six months from September, around the same time as work starts on RAF Lyneham.

Balfour Beatty, the company selected for the Lyneham reconstruction programme, is also the company involved with raising the bridges for Network Rail.

Dr Brian Mathew, the Liberal Democrat candidate for North Wiltshire at the next general election, is calling for clear planning ahead of the closures.

He said: “The works on the bridges are no doubt necessary for the electrification of the railway lines, but it is essential that it is co-ordinated properly.”
