Special constables from Calne and Chippenham have scooped a regional award for their work with young people for the second time.

Wiltshire Police had the honour of awarding the team trophy to their own specials: Millis Miller, acting special inspector Karen Ravenscroft, and acting special sergeants Pauline McAlonan and Selena Tuck.

They won the award, being chosen ahead of teams from Avon and Somerset, Devon and Cornwall and Dorset and Gloucestershire, for their part in the Bluez ’n’ Zuz programme.

The disco and games evening was set up for 13 to 17-year-olds by working closely with young people in the Calne area who were reported as being involved in anti-social behaviour.

The night was designed to let underage teenagers enjoy a night out in a realistic but safe environment.

Police say the work the team has carried out has helped reduce reports of anti-social behaviour and has developed a greater level of understanding between them and young people.

Richard Palusinski, head of special constabulary, said: “I am absolutely delighted that this team has secured the regional trophy.

“It is the second successive year that Wiltshire specials have won the trophy and is a hard won accolade against strong competition.”

Angus Macpherson, police and crime commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon, said: “I was pleased to hear a big cheer when the team award was won. Congratulations to them.”

The next Blues ’n’ Zuz event is a firework night for Years 7-11 at Beversbrook Leisure Centre in Calne tomorrow, 7-9pm. Entry is £2.
