Police are investigating claims by old people in Devizes about anti-social behaviour being caused by young motorists.

Police were alerted by elderly residents of the Stanford Court sheltered housing scheme in Sheep Street.

They say the problem is ongoing despite police going to the scene and moving young drivers on from the Wiltshire Council car park next to Stanford Court.

Residents have met with Simon Jacobs, the chairman of Devizes Area Board, to discuss the possibility of obtaining a CCTV camera for the car park.

An approach has also been made to try and obtain support from Devizes Town Council.

The town council’s planning committee decided it could not support the introduction of a CCTV into the town’s system.

But it was told by town beat manager PC Chris Mead that Noel Woolrych, manager of the town’s CCTV, was attempting to obtain a temporary camera to be used in the Sheep Street car park.

It would be well placed to spot any future problems in the vicinity.

Inspector Matthew Arm-strong told the town council meeting: “We do undertake proactive patrols in the car park. The residents don’t often see the people who are there which is difficult for us to prosecute.

“Under the harassment law it has to be witnessed by a police officer or police community support officer.”
