Anyone can be queen of the castle – but they’ll need a king’s ransom to afford it.

The principal part of Devizes Castle has come up for let.

But with seven grand bedrooms, five bathrooms and its own magnificent tower, the rent will set you back £7,500 a month.

Jenny Kimmings, lettings manager with agents Hamptons International, said: “It is 100 per cent the most unusual property I have ever handled.”

There’s been lots of interest in the building, but only two viewings: one couple from abroad and one from London.

The origions of the castle, now divided into two homes and in private ownership, date back to the early 12th century when it was built to secure the Norman conquest.

It remained a major centre of power for the following centuries where it played host to royalty and important political figures.

In the Civil War it was in Royalist hands and was first besieged in 1643 beore the Roundheads were put to flight at the Battle of Roundway Down.

Two years later it was besieged and fell to Cromwell who ordered the building reduced to rubble.

The castle you see today took two years to build, finishing in 1840, and was the home of local tradesman Valentine Leach.

In exchange for the £7,500 rental, the new occupant can enjoy stone archways, mullioned windows, oak strip floors, high ceilings and working shutters.

With a host of huge reception rooms including a vast drawing room, library, dining room and picture gallery there is plenty of space for entertaining.

And to say thank you for your fortune in finding the castle of your dreams, there’s also a prayer room.
