Views on whether Marlborough should get CCTV are being sought.

The town council has met four potential CCTV suppliers but before a decision is made residents and businesses are being asked for their opinions.

There is only one question in the online survey – ‘Do you support the town council’s decision to have CCTV in Marlborough?’ – but there is also a comment box.

Mayor Guy Loosmore said: “Everybody has the chance to contribute an opinion or comment and it is up to individuals to decide whether they do or do not but we have to encourage people to make an input so we can take their opinions on board before we decide whether to go ahead with this.

“We will discuss the results and, depending on what it says, we will decide whether to go forward, look at other options or whether we need to modify plans.

“In terms of a timeframe I would imagine that we would make a decision in the first quarter of next year but there are various processes we have to go through first.”

The town council has narrowed the selection process down to two potential suppliers who are currently working on like-for-like proposals.

It is estimated that CCTV will cost between £25,000 and £35,000 as well as ongoing maintenance costs.

The town council has already ring-fenced £20,000 and is working with the Chamber of Commerce to identify external funds.

The consultation will be online until Friday, December 20, at www.marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk
