Sadly, it seems probable that the stolen Marlborough mayoral chain will have been melted down, since it could be so difficult to dispose of without recognition.

If this is the case, and a cash settlement is reached with the insurers, would it not be sensible to use the cash for some project to benefit the town, which would otherwise be unaffordable, rather than commission a replacement chain, which would have no historical value?

Tradition would still be maintained by the presence of the maces and the mayor’s adornment could be of a more modest nature appropriate to our present economic circumstances.
