POLICE in Devizes have launched an operation to combat shoplifting.

Starting this week, uniform and plain clothes officers will be out and about targeting shoplifters in the run-up to Christmas.

Sgt Ronnie Lungu said: “As well as acting as a deterrent, we want to reassure people that they can do their shopping in Devizes without fear.”

Police Community Support Officers will also be at certain locations giving crime prevention leaflets to the public.

They will be at Morrisons in Estcourt Street today from noon to 3pm, on December 5 from 9am to noon and December 19 from 9am to noon; at Tesco in Maryport Street on December 12 from 9am to noon; and in Devizes Market Place on December 19 from 9am to noon.

The Bobby Van will also be at B&Q in Devizes today and November 28 from 9am to noon offering advice about how to make homes more secure.
