A van driver from Calne who led police on a high-speed chase was only stopped when he was rammed by one of four police cars forming a rolling road block.

Darren Andrews, who police believed had been drinking, went up to 100mph as he tried to get away from the pursuing officers on notoriously dangerous roads.

As well as going at high speed he went the wrong way round a roundabout, through red traffic lights, across double white lines and ignored keep left bollards.

And the 31-year-old also drove into a town centre multi-storey car park going up and down the levels in a bid to shake off the following officers.

After hearing Andrews had two previous dangerous driving convictions and other motoring matters a judge at Swindon Crown Court jailed him for 10 months on Friday.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, said a police patrol spotted him carrying out a risky overtaking manoeuvre on the A350 on Sunday June 23, so pulled him over.

He said the van stopped at Stoney Gutter, near Trowbridge, but as the officer got out of his car to speak to him it accelerated away, spinning the wheels as it went.

It then sped at up to 75mph in the 60mph zone to West Ashton, slowing to 40mph as it went through the lights which were on red.

After going the wrong side of a bollard and wring way round a roundabout the van went along County Way then Castle Place and into the multi storey car park.

He went up and down the floors before exiting on the Castle Street, then on to West Ashton Road where he reached 100mph.

The van headed back towards Stoney Gutter with an unmarked police BMW, driven by a VIP escort and pursuit driver, leading the chase.

His skills were needed to get in front of the van while other police vehicles got either side to slow it down.

The Astra collided with the back of the BMW at about 35mph before a fourth police car deliberately drove into the back of the van as they slowed it between them.

When he was taken to the police station he said he could not provide a sample of breath as he had 'slight asthma'.

Andrews, of Nuthatch Road, Calne, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.

The court heard he had numerous motoring convictions including two for dangerous, aggravated taking without consent, driving while disqualified and drink-driving.

Jailing him and banning him from the road for three years Judge Douglas Field said "This was a serious episode of dangerous driving.

"This is aggravated by your bad record. Two previous for dangerous driving and one for excess alcohol and various other motoring related offending."
