A Devizes burglar who stole £200 from his own grandmother has been jailed for 28 months by a judge at Salisbury Crown Court.

Scott Grant, 22, from Waiblingen Way, Devizes, admitted two charges of burglary and was sentenced last Friday.

Judge Douglas Field heard that Grant’s 82-year-old grandmother had left her home at 10.30am on July 25 and returned at 5.30pm to find that £200 cash contained in envelopes was missing. She told police she suspected her grandson as she wouldn’t let him in the house.

Grant’s fingerprints were found on one of the envelopes and he was arrested and interviewed, when he denied stealing the money.

On August 20 a house in Alan Cobham Road, Devizes, was broken into and several items of jewellery of great sentimental value were taken.

This included a gold chain given to Shane Spring by his late grandfather, which he kept draped over his grandfather’s photo in his bedroom. None of the jewellery was recovered.

Grant, who did not know his victims, admitted stealing the items and selling them to a woman in a market in Trowbridge. He also admitted stealing the cash from his grandmother.

By committing these offences, Grant was in breach of a 10-month suspended sentence given on September 20 last year at Salisbury Crown Court for breaking into a house in Southbroom Road, Devizes, on August 7, 2012.

Alex Daymond, defending, said Grant knew he had let his family down very badly. His crimes were linked to his drug use. Mr Daymond said: “Now he is in custody he is forced to stop using drugs and feels all the better for it. He has had his first taste of custody and it is not a place he wants to return to.”

Judge Field told Grant: “The people you burgled suffered great upset and trauma and only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”

Grant was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for each burglary, to run concurrently, and must also serve the ten months for last year’s offence, which will be added to the 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £120.
