One has to congratulate the Gazette & Herald’s opinion column last week for directing some very embarrassing ‘pothole’ questions to Wiltshire Council regarding its now obviously ill-fated Balfour Beatty Living Places contract.

I would expect the answers to be somewhat even more than just embarrassing, but expect they will be conspicuous by their absence from the cabinet member for Highways, as per usual.

How can our distinguished council be so naive as to think, even for a moment, that any contract is a ‘good un’ just because it’s cheaper than the others?

Surely even a first-time home buyer hiring someone in to cut say their grass, soon learns better than that.

Driving around Wiltshire during the past three months, I had begun to notice the many many engineers’ yellow markings on the highways, and began to think (it appears now incorrectly) that things had turned the corner with regard to the now infamous Wiltshire potholes.

By the way, I also noticed last week that Mr Cameron had a reshuffle in his central government cabinet.

Perhaps the time is now ripe for Coun Jane Scott to likewise follow his lead, and get herself someone that has ‘got a grip’ in charge of highways to start and sort the mess out.
