Brian Douglas (Doug) Taylor, 75, was remembered by a packed congregation at St Laurence Church, Hilmarton, the parish in which he spent most of his life. A couple of years ago he moved into residential care in Chippenham, where he made friends. He took trouble to know the names of everyone who looked after him, whether in the care home or hospital, and always addressed them by name.

He died at Great Western Hospital, Swindon, where he had received long periods of treatment for various health problems.

Mr Taylor was the youngest of Harold and Ethel Taylor’s three sons.

In his youth, he was a member of the Air Training Corps, and some thought that he would seek a career in the RAF.

However, he opted to continue the family’s farming tradition, and set up his own poultry unit which supplied eggs to businesses and retail customers over a wide area.

His cousin, David, said: “He was very reliable, and formed deep friendships with many of his customers, who held him in high regard. He always worked excessively long hours in his business.

“He offered opportunities for many local young people to earn money by collecting and packing eggs after school, and any of them who shared his great passion for football would be offered transport to the County Ground and also to some away games.

“He had a season ticket at Swindon Town for many years and had a wide knowledge of other football clubs and their players.”

The Rev Alison Way, who officiated, mentioned Mr Taylor’s love of motor sport, zest for speed and various mishaps.

His cousin recalled: “After one of his car accidents, in 1963, a young radiographer was called in to Princess Margaret Hospital to X-ray the extensively damaged Doug. This was Valerie, who became his wife, although sadly the marriage lasted only a few years.”

Mr Taylor visited the Le Mans 24-hour race in France on three occasions in recent years, in the company of friends, and he enjoyed socialising, especially with other motor sport enthusiasts.

His cousin said: “He was a very generous man, and contributed quietly to various good causes. He is remembered very fondly.”

After the service, everyone was welcomed to share refreshments and reminiscences at the Duke Hotel, where a display of photographs recalled Mr Taylor’s life.
