A film-maker who grew up in Chippenham has returned home to make a short film.

Former Sheldon School pupil Nick Rutter, 31, went on to study media at Chippenham College. He got his break at 17 when he did work experience in London for The Artists Company and was offered a job as a runner.

Now he has been filming in his home town for the first time. Chrysalis is a dark reflection on teenage romance and how it can become self-destructive.

It has been viewed more than 10,200 times since going online.

A cast and crew from London and Bristol were joined by friends of Mr Rutter’s brothers, Enyo and Seshi Humphrey-Ackumy, who go to Sheldon School.

It was shot over two days and includes scenes beneath the Reel Cinema, a party scene in Mr Rutter’s mum’s house in Langley Road, where he grew up, and Buckles chip shop, next to the bus station, where he worked for two years as a teenager.

Viewers can also spot the weir, a wall on Marshfield Road and a street shot in London Road near the Pack Horse pub.

Mr Rutter said: “I’d like to film in Chippenhaam again. It was much easier than in London. People are more interested in it and willing to be involved and help.”

The four-and-a-half-minute film stars a 15-year-old boy in love with a classmate. Unable to express his feelings he becomes isolated and falls into a destructive mental state, which goes unnoticed by the girl.

Mr Rutter, who now lives in London, said: “I wanted to draw attention to the truly awkward discomfort of teenage life in rural England, an age group often unrepresented in film and TV.”

His film was made with a £5,000 budget and all the actors worked for free.

Its music was written by Lapalux, for whom Mr Rutter created the video for for single Without You.
