Devizes Town Council has called for a permanent solution to anti-social driving in Station Road car park.

The police and Wiltshire Council installed temporary bollards filled with water in the car park three years ago to block the main access road near to the recycling skips. They were put there specifically to stop young drivers from speeding and carrying out noisy manoeuvres.

But town councillor Nigel Carter, who lives off Station Road, said they continued to gather there, making high speed handbrake turns.

He said on occasions the bollards have been displaced, with two being thrown down the old railway embankment.

He said: “Car drivers are doing doughnuts in the car park five nights a week. It needs to be stopped. It would be better to have permanent rubber strips across the car park to discourage the noisy stuff.”

Coun John Parker said: “When I was down in Station Road speaking to people during the election they were very worried about it.”

The committee agreed to write to Wiltshire Council, which owns the car park, asking for the bollards to be removed and permanent traffic calming measures introduced.

Sgt Joanne Spencer told the town council that people should pass on registration numbers of vehicles being driven in an anti- social manner.

She said: “If we can get registration numbers then we will visit people and advise them on their behaviour and the impact they are having on others.”
