A wide range of sporting activities tailored for older people will be available in Corsham after the launch of a fitness club.

The Corsham Fitness and Friendship Club is run by Age UK Wiltshire to give pensioners in the town more things to do.

Dance classes, bowling and T’ai Chi are all on offer at the fortnightly sessions, as well as indoor curling.

Active ageing coordinator Sally Evans said: “It’s an indoor game like the Olympic sport on ice, but our stones are set on ball bearings so they work on a wooden floor.

“If anyone’s got a disability or a bad back they can still take part, and it’s good for people in wheelchairs as well, though it does often get quite competitive.

“We’re also hoping to do indoor bowls, which is like the outdoor game but specially adapted.”

The club will also provide a place for people to meet and socialise.

Ms Evans said: “We are trying to avoid any kind of social isolation, but the prime thing is to keep them fit as well.”

The charity, which supports older people across the county, already runs similar clubs in other towns which have proved successful.

Ms Evans said: “It usually takes a while for word to spread, but there’s a group in Westbury now with around 20 regular members.

“There are lots of other things we want to do as well; we’ve got a lady coming who is an ex-dancer, and will be trying some ballroom routines, and we might be having some folk dancing as well.

“What we do will depend on who comes along; we want to let them decide.”

The first session takes place on September 26, at St Aldhelm’s Church Hall, on Pickwick Road. Entry is £2.50, which includes refreshments.
