Chippenham is to lose two businesses which require more room to expand.

Car parts firm DTR VMS, which has been on Bumpers Farm industrial estate since 1992, is this week in the process of moving nearly 200 staff to the White Horse Business Park in Trowbridge.

Operations manager Mike Franklin said the site was no longer big enough for its needs.

And last Tuesday Herman Miller was given planning permission to relocate to Bowerhill, Melksham, which will leave the industrial unit at Methuen Park empty.

The American furniture company is to build a 17,000 sq m manufacturing and storage facility designed by Grimshaw Architects, which has worked with Herman Miller since 1975 and built the Chippenham building.

The new site, on land near Christie Miller Sports Centre, will amalgamate its Chippenham and Bath operations. Currently it processes timber boards at its Bath woodmill and assembles and upholsters chairs and screens in the Chippenham building, which also deals with storage and distribution.

The firm said no jobs would be lost and all 150 employees at Chippenham would be relocated to Bowerhill.

Chippenham Chamber of Commerce said the loss of two businesses in the town due to lack of expansion space highlighted the need for employment land at Showell Farm.

President Rob Perks said: “That’s exactly why we need the larger warehouses.

“Chippenham is full of houses but nowhere to work, so people have to go and work elsewhere and we’ll end up with a dormitory town.”
