FOR the first time in many years the September farmers’ market in Devizes Market Place is able to go ahead on Saturday.

The September market, on the first Saturday of the month, often falls on the same day as Devizes Carnival procession when there is traditionally a funfair in the Market Place.

But this year the procession took place last Saturday, meaning the farmers’ market can go ahead.

Jane Wormel, of Healed Earth Organics vegetable producer near Devizes, said Devizes farmers’ market is one of the busier ones in Wiltshire and missing a month can make quite an impact.

She said: “This is our best time of year for produce and we can’t ask the vegetables to wait a week before they are ready for picking, so it is essential to have regular outlets. “With the recent mix of sun and rain it is sometimes difficult to keep up.

“Fortunately, we’re a smallholding of mixed production so nothing goes to waste.”

The farmers’ market, which is held from 9am to 1pm, regularly has more than 20 stalls.

Among their produce is a wide range of freshly picked vegetables, totally traceable meats and meat products, trout, cheese, bread and award-winning pies.

The market also sells preserves, fruit juice, rape seed oil and dressings.

And there are locally marinated olives, seasonal plants and herbs and traditionally smoked products.

Shoppers can also find cakes, natural soaps, cider and beer, chilli sauces and dressings and wooden garden products.
