It’s that time of year again when the Wadworth shire horses get to go on their well-earned summer holiday, this year on August 9.
The start of their annual break has become a regular event for the crowds of fans who assemble to cheer these well-loved local celebrities as they are led through the village of Poulshot, and enjoy a customary pint of beer, before being set free to enjoy the next two weeks on a ‘self-catering’ holiday.
The horses, who spend the rest of the year at work with the brewery, are a familiar sight in Devizes as they deliver casks of real ale to the local Wadworth pubs.
They are essentially working horses but they also take part in carnivals and country fairs, winning many prizes for their immaculate turnout, grooming and show discipline.
But for two weeks each summer the horses kick up their heels and enjoy their freedom at their holiday home near The Raven in Poulshot.
People come from all over the surrounding area to view the horses, who enjoy the attention as they parade down the village street, are released from their leading reins, and then canter with delight around the fields.
The horses will be arriving at The Raven in Poulshot at around noon on August 9.
