Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Wiltshire and Swindon Angus Macpherson will visit Aldbourne Youth Council’s play day and new community facilities on Wednesday.

Mr Macpherson will be meeting Aldbourne Youth Council representatives following them receiving a £3,000 grant from the PCC’s Fund, which is administrated by the Community Foundation for Wiltshire & Swindon.

Aldbourne Youth Council has put the money towards paint and materials needed to refurbish a new facility for young people and the community in general called the Community Junction.

Areas for young people include a chill zone, after-school cafe, activities/workshops with a youth worker and cinema lectures/courses. There are also separate areas for younger and older children (aged 13 plus), so both groups have their own space.

Older young people will also help to run a charity shop and a holiday let to raise on-going funds and gain work and life skills.

An existing village internet cafe, where the younger generation are on hand to provide advice to older people, has also moved to Community Junction located in The Square.

Much of the refurbishment has been completed, with the facility now needing final furnishings and painting to be completed. The official opening is planned for the autumn, although people are starting to use the centre this summer.

Mr Macpherson said: “I understand that this project has come about following a spike in 2012 in anti-social behaviour and crime in the village, which the youth council say was due to boredom and drinking among older youths.

“The youth council seem to be a very active group, working on solutions to community matters themselves and seeking support from others when needed. This is an ethos that is very much at the centre of my Police and Crime Plan. I’m looking forward to meeting those involved and seeing the Community Junction first hand.”

Although overseen by adult trustees, Aldbourne Youth Council is run by a committee of young people who are active in running schemes and raising funds.

During his visit the Commissioner will be attending a Play Day on the village’s football/sports field.

This is organsied by the youth council for people from the wider Marlborough area to attend and runs from 11am to 3pm.

Activities include a barbecue, bouncy castle, arts and crafts, music and sports activities. Mr Macpherson will also be given a tour of the Community Junction.
