CLOGS Musical Theatre were on top form at Chippenham Town Hall with arguably the most entertaining summer concert to grace that elegant building. The audience, including myself, loved it.

There was not a weak spot in the entire performance and it proved what many have always asserted, that Chippenham has talented, committed people of all ages who give time and energy to create a life style for the community that encourages participation and fosters a sense of well being.

Nowhere was this more apparent than in the faces of the many younger generation performers who alongside their more experienced CLOGS adults gave it their all without losing their youthful freshness.

It reminded me of a summer school that my husband and I ran in Chippenham. We decided that we would stage Oliver! Using mostly young people but with guest performers as the adults in the cast, we managed to put on a fully costumed and staged show for three performances at the Neeld Hall. It was the most rewarding experience for both the adults and the young and as people of different generations we all gained a greater understanding of each other and accepted and met the challenges that can occur.

My experience of young people leads me to believe that they live up to the expectations placed upon them. If expectations are negative that is often the outcome. When expectations are high and you work as a team the young rarely let you down and often show the so-called adults the way to behave.

Young people are making major contributions to community life in Chippenham and this was apparent at All That Jazz. Well done CLOGS Musical Theatre. There is a lesson here for those who seek to polarise young and old. Don’t. By doing so you show a lack of tolerance often accompanied by rudeness and bullying. Being old is not a permit to demonise all young people and being young is not a licence to intimidate the elderly.
