Wiltshire residents inspired by Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon win can now play tennis for free during the summer holidays.

Wiltshire Council has made its outdoor tennis courts free on weekdays from Thursday July 25 to Friday August 30, as part of the Legacy for Wiltshire, which encourages people to keep active and healthy.

The free sessions will be available on the outdoor courts at Leighton Recreation Centre in Westbury, Tisbury and District Sports Centre, Amesbury Sports and Community Centre, Springfield Leisure Centre in Corsham, Devizes Leisure Centre and Tidworth Leisure Centre.

Cabinet member for leisure, Jonathon Seed, said: “Tennis is often seen as an elitist sport, but we want to make it accessible for all. I’m sure there are many would-be Andy Murrays and Laura Robsons out there who would love the opportunity to practise on a proper court.

“Having free sessions means we can offer everyone the opportunity to pick up a racket and give it a go. Who knows, having this free facility may help produce another Wimbledon champion in the future.”

The free sessions are from 9am to 5pm Monday to Fridays only.

Members can book one week in advance and non-members two days in advance.

Pre-bookings are limited to a one-hour session per day but customers are free to stay on the court if the next session has not been booked or when no others are waiting to play.

The outdoor court hire is free of charge and there are no age restrictions. There will be a charge for hiring other equipment such as rackets and tennis balls.
