Chippenham Tennis Club officials are expecting a busy summer following Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win.

The club, at Chippenham Sports Club in Bristol Road, offers courts, coaching and courses throughout the year.

Club chairman Tony Clark said: “Every year we get increased interest, and this year is no exception. It’s a limited increase but big things will come over the school summer holidays when we have our summer camps. Kids can come for four or five days and play tennis.

“I suspect the main increase will come when it’s the end of the school year.”

Chippenham Tennis Club runs coaching lessons starting at age four. It has about 200 children on its coaching programme and about 100 adult members. Club sessions for friendly play occur three times a week all year round, but more competitive games are also on offer.

Mr Clark said: “For those who want competition, we have entered 11 teams in the Chippenham and District Tennis League this summer and one team in the Swindon League.

“Our top men’s team heads Division 1 as we enter the last month of the season.”

Marlborough Tennis Club chairman Hilda Moore said: “There are always more people out playing tennis around Wimbledon and certainly the youngsters have been very enthusiastic about Andy Murray’s win.

“I think there’s still a buzz from the Olympics last year, where Andy Murray won a gold medal, and it’s spurred interest in all sorts of different sports.

“A few weeks ago we had our mini tennis festival on the courts at Marlborough College for Year 3 and 4 pupils and we had more children attend than ever before – 180 kids.

“I think Marlborough Tennis Club is a bit small to really feel the effects of Andy’s win but I’ve had a few more emails from parents asking about membership.”

Travis Speedie, head coach at Malmesbury Tennis Club, off Tetbury Hill, said: “We have had an increase in people coming to tennis as a result of Andy Murray winning Wimbledon.

“All of a sudden more people came along and my diary is full up. It has been so busy and I am still planning how to get the paperwork done.

“A win like Murray’s boosts everyone because people get inspired and now they look at British coaches and say ‘okay, these guys do know what they are talking about’.”

Devizes Tennis Club has had more casual users playing tennis at its courts since Andy Murray’s win at Wimbledon.

Club chairman Penny Croutear said: “There are quite a lot of people coming along for the pay and play use of the club. It often happens after Wimbledon and in the sunny weather. We have had some new members join over the last six weeks.”
