Calne town councillors hope they can find a solution to traffic problems created by priority signs in Curzon Street with the help of senior highways engineers at Wiltshire Council.

At present, priority is given to drivers using the roundabout at the top of Curzon Street to turn into The Square and Wood Street, as the road is not wide enough for two vehicles.

But councillors say this is causing a bottleneck at peak times of the day and town clerk Linda Roberts has consulted highways engineers at Wiltshire Council about the issue.

Calne Area Board and the Area Highways Working Group have also discussed the matter and raised the possibility of running alternative options as trials.

Coun Charles Boase said: “I think we have got a problem and we have got to sort it out. There may be a solution and no-one has thought of it.

“At the moment it’s not a good situation. One of the simple solutions is to take the priority signs down, but that’s not for me to say because I’m not a traffic engineer.”

Coun Greg Widger said: “Before Curzon Street was reduced in width we never used to suffer with the same amount of traffic stacking up. Now everything grinds to a halt.

“If you change something and the situation is worse there’s your evidence to say that has had a detrimental effect on Calne.”
