Police are warning residents in Calne to make sure their properties are secure from opportunist burglars who are using hot weather to their advantage.

On sunny days and warm nights people may leave windows and doors open to ventilate their homes, but this could leave them vulnerable to intruders.

On July 10 a man, who had spotted an insecure window, entered a property in Back Road and stole several items, including a Sony laptop computer and car keys.

He used the keys to drive off in a Citroen Saxo parked on the driveway, which he abandoned after crashing in Newcroft Road.

A man with blond hair and a white hoodie was seen running away from the scene towards Lickhill Road.

On the same night a burglar also entered a property in Shelburne Road and took an Acer laptop.

PCSO Mark Cook said: “People should be extra vigilant at the moment and, with this nice weather, they should make sure they don’t leave windows or doors open unnecessarily.”

Rural areas in Calne have also been hit by crime recently, including a farm in Quemerford.

Trespassers drove onto the farm overnight between July 9 and July 10.

They broke into a workshop and took high value items worth a total of £1,000.

A farm at Dumb Post Hill, Bremhill, was also targeted overnight between July 10 and July 11.

Burglars cut off three padlocks, broke into a barn and stole equipment including a generator.
