Pupils swapped roles with grandparents to show the older generation how to become computer savvy.

Youngsters at Abbeyfield School in Chippenham welcomed family members to their school last week to help them become more IT confident, using guides they had prepared.

The project is part of BT Digital Champions, which encourages young people to reach out to those who are not computer literate.

Organiser Ralph Plummer, director of achievement for business, ICT and maths at Abbeyfield School, said: “Part of our Year 10 coursework was to create a number of user guides to help people get online, use email and be safe on the web.

“We felt it would be good for the students to work with people who maybe haven’t accessed IT yet or are nervous about it.

“It was an informal event where people can sit and have a cup of tea and cake and talk through the basics of using the internet.”

The participating students received tickets to see a Rock Assembly concert featuring Misha B at Wembley Arena next week.

Mr Plummer said: “The students have had lots of feedback on their guides, so they are quite confident about their material. It’s a good thing to do from a CV point of view – it’s effectively volunteering work as well.”

Student Holly Callow, 15, said: “It is a good idea to show older generations how technology has changed and I get the chance to show them, which is rewarding.”

Amrit Rallings, 15, said he was keen to show his nan the IT basics. He said: “It will help people like my nan gain confidence with computers and technology.”
