Children at King’s Lodge Primary School in Chippenham met a willow weaver and a bee keeper in an eco week to help them learn about their environment.

At the start of the week, children from Key Stage 1 heard from Rosie the tree, who wrote to ask them to help her as she was going to be cut down.

They wrote speech bubbles from all the animals in the forest explaining why Rosie was important to them and discussed the importance of trees.

The school also had a visit from willow weaver Ruth Parsons, who helped children make a giant bee, a flower and a dragonfly.

Several children also made willow hearts to sell at an eco fair at the end of the week, and children from Year 1 to Year 5 used their creative skills to make lavender bags, bird feeders and a mathematical problem box to sell.

Their efforts raised £750 for the school to spend on new playground games to help the children socialise during play time.

During the week Fee Robinson, from the Wiltshire bee centre, also visited and gave a presentation.

Teacher Denise Williams said: “We wanted to do something so the children would understand about their environment and to get them to understand you don’t have to spend a lot of money – you can upcycle and recycle.”

The school was awarded a grant from the Borough Lands charity to hire outside visitors for the eco week.
