Winners of this year’s Chippenham Area Board Community Awards were announced in a ceremony in Upper Seagry.

The awards, which celebrate the achievements of volunteers, were given out in four categories: individual; team or group; youth individual; and youth team or group.

Cooks from Chippenham charity for the homeless, Doorway, received the award for team or group.

They were recognised for providing food that is nutritional and free of charge. They produce a two-course Thursday lunch on a budget of £1 per head for more than 60 people each week.

Lisa Lewis, chief executive of Doorway, said: “I am incredibly proud that the team has won the award and it thoroughly deserves the recognition achieved from the Area Board.

“As an organisation we believe that food is critical to a person’s sense of wellbeing and the Doorway cooks are extremely talented at producing a highly imaginative and nutritional menu with very little resources.”

In the individual category there were two winners: Bob Gaywood and Margaret Fortune. Mr Gaywood was recognised for his 20 years of volunteering for DEVELOP Enhancing Community Support, a charity that helps community organisations.

Mrs Fortune’s award was for her work with the local branch of Arthritis Care.

Abbeyfield School student Emma-Kate Guildford, 13, won the youth individual award for organising fundraising events, including sponsored walks and silences, for many charities.

The youth team or group award went to Hardenhuish Woods Team, recognising the hard work of the six young men who meet fortnightly to help clear woods of unwanted laurels.

Chairman of Chippenham area board Linda Packard gave out the awards with vice-chairman Chris Caswill at the ceremony on July 1.

She said: “It was really nice to celebrate that we have such excellent volunteers, they get no recognition even though they really have done well.

“It was a great experience and really good to see so much volunteering in Chippenham.”
