Roger Thorne Roger John Thorne died at the Royal United Hospital in Bath on Sunday morning aged 64.

The youngest son of Wilfred and Grace Thorne, Mr Thorne lived at Elwood in Chippenham for 22 years, where he spent many happy hours playing and exploring the woods and surrounding land of Birds Marsh. It was there he developed a love for the countryside which he carried throughout his life.

From an early age he developed a passion for fishing, and often talked of hours spent sat by the River Avon at Kellaways in all weathers.

After attending Chippenham Grammar School he qualified as an accountant and went to work in Gravesend for the Merchant Navy.

In 1968 he met Janice Kilmartin and then settled back in Chippenham working for the tax office. They married at St Mary’s Church in Chippenham and had two children, Richard in 1973 and Joanne in 1977. Mr Thorne loved family life and liked nothing better than spending time with his family.

He became a prominent member of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes and was held in high regard by all members. He was part of the Chippenham Provence for over 30 years, holding the Grand Primo position for 2013.

Mr Thorne went on to be employed as a accountant on the Bowood estate. He spent his spare hours fishing in the grounds or walking through the gardens. Bowood always held a special place in his heart.

Mr Thorne had five grandchildren, who will always remember Grampy playing cricket in the garden with them or taking them on their horseriding lessons. He will never be forgotten.

Anyone who was privileged to know Mr Thorne or who came into contact with him during his life would know he was very much a gentlemen and will always be remembered for this.
