A bus has smashed into a lamppost in Hilperton Drive, Trowbridge, causing road closures in both directions.

The Faresaver bus was travelling from Chippenham to Trowbridge when it crashed around 11.30 this morning, causing the windscreen to smash.

Seven passengers were travelling on the bus, including a newborn baby, but no one was injured and the driver was treated for shock at the scene.

Passenger Jeff Knight and wife Pam from Calne were travelling from Chippenham to Trowbridge.

Mr Knight said: “We had just come round the roundabout, hit the kerb and bounced off the lamppost.

“We are pleased no one was injured. It is just one of those things but it won’t put us off.”

Lorna Howard was travelling from Melksham with her three children Mya, nine, George, three, and newborn baby Lily May.

“We were all sat down but the kids were right at the front and got covered in glass. It is George’s first bus ride and it might be his last.”

Passenger Patsy Williams was travelling from Melksham to Trowbridge to meet friends and said: “He (the driver) controlled the bus wonderfully well.

"We all thought we were going to  go over.”

Faresaver director Justin Pickford was on the scene in minutes and said: “It is too early to say how much damage has been done.

“A replacement bus will be here shortly.”
