A new greengrocer’s shop selling local produce in Malmesbury is being thanked for an increase in trade in the high street.

David West opened Fruits, Roots and Shoots in the former Malmesbury Rocks shop in the High Street at the end of May.

He said: “It’s been fantastic – I’ve had a really good response from everyone. It’s gone better than I thought it would, and I thought it would go well.

“It’s nice to get a response on products; people are coming in and getting handfuls of stuff and loving the layout. I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better.

“I’ve had other shopkeepers saying their business has gone up since I opened, which is also nice and what it’s all about.”

Robert Goulding, who works at butcher’s shop Walker Leonard in Market Lane, said: “We’re doing OK. We’ve been better since the greengrocer’s opened. It’s something the town needed. There were two before and then it was just the Co-op and some people didn’t like that.

“I think it is drawing people into the town.”

Aimee Frankham, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “The feedback has been excellent and the chamber has been round to support with bags of change and things.

“The public are delighted, we’re delighted.

“The shop has run out of stock on occasions and had to make emergency trips. If the amount of support is indicative then the business should be stable.”

The store sells dairy products from Brinkworth Farm and Mr West hopes to soon stock vegetables from Duchy Veg Shed in Tetbury.
