Hundreds of people are expected to turn out for Calne’s annual carnival and summer festival – a colourful display of food, drink, a fun fair and a parade.

The carnival takes place on June 29 and although plenty of activities have been planned already, organisers say there is still time to get involved either as a stall holder or in the parade itself.

Several live performances will help to provide a party atmosphere on the day, including music from the Calne Silver Band, the Calne Choral Society and Synchronize, as well as belly dancing demonstrations and a performance of High School Musical from John Bentley pupils.

There will be also be a food and craft tent in the market place, a café and crafts in the town hall and a children’s activity tent next to Calne Free Church, with face painting, craft sessions and free circus skill workshops.

Many different community groups are expected to take part in the parade, from children at Cherhill Primary School, Priestley School and Holy Trinity, to the Calne Valistas Samba Band and Britannia Majorettes.

Anne Stevens, Beavers leader for the 1st Calne Scouts, said in previous years children from the group have dressed up as characters from the Jungle Book and pirates, and this year they will be dressed as footballers. She said: “It’s something that we do regularly. It’s good to take part to show the community we’re still strong and definitely part of the community.

“It’s something they look forward to – it’s a brilliant day and a good atmosphere. They enjoy seeing what everyone else has done, what they have come up with.”

The day of the carnival is also National Armed Forces Day and the town council will be working with the Royal British Legion, the army cadets and the air training corps, who be part of the parade and will join in with a celebratory flag raising in the town gardens.

This year the council is accepting floats and trailers and has already had an entry from Heddington Amateur Dramatics Society.

Deputy town mayor Heather Canfer said: “We’re trying to get people galvanised. It’s all about the community – we’ve got to get the children involved when they’re young so hopefully they will continue being involved as they grow up.”

Planning and events officer Clare Harris said: “We are just trying to grow it with the floats to make it into a much more traditional carnival. There’s plenty going on in the town to please everyone.”

Activities in the town centre start at 2pm, the parade will leave from Bremhill View Social Club at 4pm, and events will continue until 7pm.
