A neighbour of Sandra Wiltshire told how she found her severely injured in a field in Chippenham.

At an inquest into Mrs Wiltshire's death in Salisbury this morning, Sylvia Crawley said she was on her way back home walking her dog when she saw Mrs Wiltshire and her dog, Bruce, lying in a field off Riverside Drive.

Mrs Crawley, of Matford Hill, Chippenham, said: "She said, 'I have been attacked by cows'."

Mrs Wiltshire told Mrs Crawley had been lying in the field for about an hour before being found.

Paramedics attended but could not save Mrs Wiltshire, 68. She was pronounced dead at the scene on October 11 last year.

The inquest was told that dog walkers walked in the fields by the River Avon but it was not a public right of way.  There is a footpath further up the fields.

Charles Miflin, who farms on the field where Mrs Wiltshire was found said he had put up signs saying 'Private' but they had been ripped off.

The inquest heard that Mrs Wiltshire, of Carrick Close, Chippenham, had walked in the fields by the river for many years.

The inquest continues.
