A Chippenham man must attend court after he allegedly posted obscene and racist comments on Facebook following the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby.

A post allegedly made on the man’s Facebook page on May 22, the day of the Woolwich incident, is reported to have incited the English Defence League to violence.

Wiltshire Police pooled resources with Nottinghamshire Police after members of the Muslim community there complained.

A 28-year-old man from Moorlands, Chippenham, was charged on Saturday under the Communications Act 2003. He is accused of sending an offensive, indecent, obscene and menacing message by means of a public communication network and is due to appear at North Wiltshire Magistrates’ Court in Chippenham on June 21.

A police spokesman said it was the only charge he was aware had been made locally as a repercussion of the Woolwich murder.
