Plans by Swindon Town to move its training ground to Calne will bring a huge boost to the area, it was forecast this week.

The npower League One club met Calne Town Council and an architect on Tuesday to finalise the details of a £300,000 extension of the Beversbrook sports complex to accommodate the club’s first team and academy.

The plans include a gym, seminar rooms for the first team and youth team, changing rooms and a boot room, all of which will be available for use by other groups.

Swindon Town will also benefit from pre-existing plans to build four more grass pitches, funded by cash from Sport England, the Football Foundation and Viridor, which should be ready for hire in February 2014.

Town clerk Linda Roberts said the council would take out a loan to pay for the relocation project, which would be repaid by Swindon Town over time after the club signs up to train at Beversbrook.

She said: “The lease will be tied to the loan so there’s no public money at risk. It will be one of the biggest projects in Calne, in terms of financial commitment. I have heard whispers that players are looking around Calne for houses, so there are a lot of other benefits to Swindon coming.

“We have gained kudos by being able to say Calne is hosting Swindon Town. Swindon is the only professional team in Wilt-shire so it’s an honour.”

It is hoped the planning application will be submitted within a couple of weeks. Both parties hope building will begin at the start of July, to allow the club to move in October.

Swindon Town chairman Jed McCrory believes the new facilities will potentially provide more players for the club’s first team. He said: “This is the platform for the club going forward.”
