Music teacher Nigel Maloney believes he has re-discovered the television his grandparents Winifred and Alfred watched the coronation on 60 years ago.

His grandfather, who was a foreman at the Nestle condensed milk factory in Bath Road, Chippenham, bought the television just before the event.

Mr Maloney, 57, from Little Somerford, rescued the television from his grandparents’ garage, which he was clearing out, and hopes to get it working again.

He said: “I missed the coronation by two years, but I remember watching the television up until the early 1970s.

“Apparently there were 20 million people watching the coronation in this country, but I suppose today it would be billions.

“When we were younger we went up to see Charles and Diana’s wedding and we went to see the jubilee in 1977. It’s important to remember the Queen has been on the throne for 60 years – it’s amazing.”

The television is a McMichael TV, produced by a firm that made televisions until the 1950s when managers decided to merge with the Sobell Group.

Mr Maloney said: “It’s very special – it’s got the folding doors and it’s got the radio and TV combined. Grandmother used to cover it with a cloth, she never left it exposed.

“I thought I was just going to pull out a pile of sawdust. It’s got a few worm holes but nothing major. It would be lovely to find a museum that would put it on show.”
