Calne’s very own music festival, which attracted around 3,500 people last year, makes its return on Saturday.

At least 30 bands will play across four stages – the main stage, the dance stage, the LeRoc Live Lounge, and the Nunny Acoustic Cafe – catering for a wide range of musical tastes.

The festival, running for the third time this year, also features sets by a host of local bands, including The Boys from County Hell who are headlining on the main stage.

They will be joined by Crinkle Cuts, an eight-piece ska, funk and reggae band, parody rapper Chip Daddy and Wiltshire-based grunge band Ambergreen.

Calnefest was set up by Wiltshire councillor Glenis Ansell and her step-daughter Clare McCoombe, a graphic designer, to give youngsters a chance to perform and to raise money for charity.

This year’s event will raise money for an after school music club at John Bentley, the town’s youth drop-in centre and the 1st Calne Scouts, who need a new hut.

Coun Ansell said: “I started it off because I went to hear the youngsters in year five at John Bentley.

“The talent there was amazing, there were some really good bands and it seemed to me there was nowhere to perform.

“If we get the turnout that we had last year, we will be firmly established as an annual festival. It seems to have taken off and caught people’s imagination.”

This year’s festival will be held at The Recreation Ground, Anchor Road, and starts at noon. The first band on the main stage will begin at 12.30pm and the last band will appear at 9pm.
