Working on community projects in Kenya next year will cost 16 Devizes School students almost £4,000 each and they have already started raising the money.

The school has sent out students to help rural communities in the African country build schools and help conserve nature for some years now and the next group to fly out will leave in July next year.

The youngsters have signed up with Camps International for a month of personal development and charitable work, though they will not know the details of what they will be doing and where they will be doing it until next January.

But they have already started raising the money they need.

Nicole Pfeil and Harry Easton catered for 20 people at a pop-up restaurant at Harry’s house in April, raising over £100.

And they have a lot more events planned. A quiz night next Friday, June 7, at the Bell by the Green is already booking up well and a car boot sale will take place in the school grounds on June 29. They have also been packing bags at local supermarkets, while sponsored bike rides and walks, cake sales and talks to local organisations are also on the cards.

Parent Kathy Davis said: “The parents have monthly meetings at the Cavalier pub in Eastleigh Road. At the moment we are doing the planning but the students are doing all the hard work. We are hoping that eventually they will take over the organising too.”

Local companies approached for support have already chipped in. Although the students offered to do work experience, companies sent back cheques without asking for any further commitment.

Although there will be lots of hard work to do during the month in Kenya, there are also opportunities for sightseeing, going on safari and climbing Mount Kenya.
