Bobby White, team GB’s handball captain, will be at the official opening of a family inclusive sports area at Hillcroft, Anchor Road, Calne, on Tuesday (May 28).

The sports area, known as a FISA, is similar to the multi-use games area at Beversbrook and is designed to be used by people of all ages and abilities.

Visitors to the area, which cost £79,000 to build and was funded by a section 106 agreement from the Hills development at Sandpit Road, can enjoy games including street snooker, billiards, cricket and basketball.

Members of the public are invited to take part in competitions at the sports area on the day, which will start at 11am. Town Mayor Mercy Baggs will begin the opening an hour later and present competition prizes.

Calne town clerk Linda Roberts said: “The use of the area has, since it has been completed, has been overwhelming. One day we went there and there were several people using it for three or four different games.

“It has really engaged young people and at the same time it has reduced anti-social behaviour. It’s not somewhere where they are being watched or coached, they can use it as they see fit.”
