Primary and secondary school pupils from Wiltshire will be putting their first aid skills to the test in the regional heat of the St John Ambulance national schools competition.

Teams of four pupils, aged from seven to 15, from 27 schools across the south west, will be taking part in the challenge today at Avon and Somerset Police headquarters, Portishead.

Last year’s winners of the junior title, All Cannings Primary School, are aiming to retain their title. Other schools competing are Monkton Park Primary and Sheldon School, in Chippenham; Calder House School, Colerne; Sherston Primary, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, Malmesbury; and St John’s, Marlborough.

Organiser Gilly Boote said: “The level of competition is always very high for this event.

“Learning first aid improves self-esteem, develops confidence and fosters a sense of belonging and service. Taking part in the schools competition gives young people a chance to practise their first aid skills in a realistic, fun and active manner.”
