The streets of Royal Wootton Bassett were once again lined with hundreds of revellers as the annual carnival took place this weekend.

There was entertainment and a feel-good atmosphere as the sun came out to mark the beginning of the parade through the market town, as part of the 41st carnival.

Crowds cheered on the participants, including the popular Bournemouth Carnival Band, who were all dressed as Spiderman, the Swindon Samba Band and a cavalcade of people in fancy dress.

The mayor, deputy mayor, town crier and junior town crier walked at the head of the parade, which included majorettes, dancers and acrobats. Entertainment was provided on a stage beside the Town Hall as crowds gathered to await the parade.

A new trophy, the George Scarrott Community Cup for Spirit of Carnival, to commemorate the local showman who was a stalwart member of the carnival committee, was presented to the Scarrott family, for their continuing support of the annual event.

The Champion Entry award was shared by Longleaze Pre-School for their Hungry Caterpillar and the Wootton Bassett Town Rotary Club, who were dressed as Alice in Wonderland, and they also won the Carnival Queen Cup.

Ben Smith, 41, said: “It’s a really great event and we always come out to see the parade go by. I think it has got more popular over the last couple of years. There were certainly some interesting costumes, to say the least.”

His 10-year-old son Edward said: “I thought it was really good – my favourite bit was the Spiderman band.”

Graham Greener, 71, travelled from Brinkworth to see the parade.

“It was great. We come out every year and normally stand on Noremarsh Road to watch the parade go by. The Spidermen were the highlight,” he said.

Carnival organiser Gillian Hughes said: “It was fantastic and I’ve had lots of people stop me and say it was the best ever. It was the best for a long time. Hats off to the floats, and the amazing costumes – everybody pulled out all the stops.”
