Devizes Festival organisers never fail to book famous names – and this year’s event from June 5 to 23 is no exception.

Perhaps best known is comedian Phill Jupitus, whose regular appearances on TV have made him a household name.

He is bringing his show, You’re Probably Wondering Why I’ve Asked You Here..., which he took to last year’s Edin-burgh Festival.

It is less of a stand-up routine than a play with three characters, all played by Mr Jupitus. With the help of an inquisitive audience, we find out more about them at the Corn Exchange on June 20.

Another familiar face from the “box” is Monty Don, the presenter of Gardeners’ World for many years, who presents An Evening With Monty Don at the Corn Exchange on June 8. He is more than just a green-fingered “celeb” and his rocky early life has given him a realistic and humorous view of the world.

Michael Wood, whose has almost single-handedly made ancient history popular through his TV programmes, reveals his great love for the Anglo-Saxon period in his talk at the town hall on June 22.

Agony aunt Virginia Ironside, whose columns in The Independent and The Oldie are seriously habit forming, talks about Growing Old Disgrace-fully at the town hall on June 23, one of the last events in this year’s programme, but well worth waiting for.

Novelist Deborah Moggach is responsible for the story that became the successful film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which was adapted from her book These Foolish Things. She has written 17 novels, including the best-selling Tulip Fever, and she will be talking about writing at the town hall on June 16.

Poet Luke Wright returns to the festival on June 5 when, as the first event on the programme, he performs his lively and humorous verse with verve and appealing self-deprecation.

After giving us The Secrets of a Crossword Setter and The Amazing Doctor Johnson at previous festivals, Tim Moorey returns to discuss The Joys of English at the Literary Institute in Northgate Street on June 7.

In one of the few dramas this year, Rob Crouch portrays the unpredictable but adored actor Oliver Reed in Oliver Reed: Wild Thing, in the Merchants Suite at the Corn Exchange, on June 16.
