Passenger dies in Melksham crash

First published in News

One person has died and another has suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash outside the Cooper-Avon tyre factory in Melksham in the early hours of Christmas Day.

The Audi A6 lost control on the road opposite the Unicorn pub at around 3.30am striking a brick wall.

One rear seat passenger was killed outright and another has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. There were five people in the car, one woman and four men, who were all in their late 20s and early 30s.

Police investigations are still going on. Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident and anyone who saw the Audi travelling along the A350 and into Melksham is asked to contact the serious collision investigation team through the 101 non-emergency number.

Very sad for all involved as well as the emergency services dealing with the accident, no time of year is easy to deal with such serious incidents as the above states though this time of year is harder still. RIP.

I don't live in Melksham any more but if I remember correctly, that is opposite the junction with Old Broughton Road? The stretch of Bath Road from the cul-de-sac formed because Beanacre Road blocks it is under 200 yards. It is difficult to see how a modern car with a high safety standard can reach a speed sufficient to kill an occupant at that point.. Certainly, and PLEASE note without prejudging anyone or any circumstances, some statistical factors seem to add to the likelihood of accidents. They are of course AGE: teens are most at risk, then young males: GENDER: Males are the drivers in more fatal accidents that women TIME: 3:30am. A higher percentage of those accidents in the small hours have fatalities VEHICLE: Certain makes such as the infamous BMW or Astras seem to attract look-at-me boy racers.
All that said, whoever is to blame, a sad event.

Your right there old ari,
it does seem some age groups want to go faster than others, not saying that is true in this case, ive certainly slowed down over the years though, very very sad.

Can someone help me as I no longer live in Melksham? The original article says "The crash happened outside the Cooper Tire factory in Melksham when a blue Audi A6 was travelling from Chippenham on the Bath Road, when it apparently lost control opposite the Unicorn Inn. "

But I checked on Google satellite and as I thought, Bath Road is blocked by the old "Bell Inn", there is only a bicycle tunnel. How could the car be travelling from Chippenham on Bath Road when it is blocked???

'arry, travel from Chippenham to west farmers (Asda) roundabout and turn left towards the coopertires entrance. That short distance from roundabout to coopertires is great for the boy racers, unfortunately its the sharp right hand bend they struggle with at speed. There is no camber on the bend so lose control on ice or wet road and your in trouble. See it everyday from canteen whilst on break. Accidents are going to happen but not as severe as this one. i'm sure the cause will be out soon.

what jigsaw 5 said abut the lack of camber on the bend.

ah that would partially explain why i took a circular skid there several years ago - i was travelling at a very low speed well within the speed limit and it was not icy as I recall, but there was definitely something odd about that bend.
Fortunately there was no-one else about.

No camber and the junction road markings are poor. Its ok for local drivers with knowledge of the corner but outsiders will be caught out. Trouble is one death won't be enough to do anything at this site. Have to wait for police enquiries and consultations.
