Chippenham historian Mike Stone’s new book shows how Chippenham has changed over the last century.

The book, Chippenham Through Time, features archive photographs of landmarks, buildings, roads and modern photographs of the same scenes.

Mr Stone took the modern day photographs himself and said this book, his sixth book on Chippenham, featured more photographs, 180, than his others.

Mr Stone, who lives near Frogwell, launched the book at Waterstones in Borough Parade, Chippenham, on Saturday with a book signing.

More than 20 books were sold and Mr Stone said: “A lot of people bought the book as a present for their parents or grandparents. One book is being sent to Australia for a present. The book contains a lot of memories about Chippenham.

“Some locals gave me free access to their archive photographs which I am grateful for. It wasn’t always easy to take the photographs of the scenes as I had to stand in the middle of busy roads for some of them. I also like to have blue skies in my photos and there were not many blue skies this year.”

Among the photos in the book is a rollerskating ring that used to be in Station Hill and a row of butchers in New Road.

Mr Stone, 64, retired as curator of Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre in 2010 after ten years.

Chippenham Through Time is published by Amberley Books, price £14.99.
