The widow of Chippenham sports enthusiast Tim Waycott said she is honoured to have been able to help youth sporting groups.

Mr Waycott died in December 2008, aged 44, after being diagnosed with cancer. He was chairman of Chippenham Sports Club for 12 years and was the driving force behind the building of a new club house.

His widow, Jo, set up the Tim Waycott Trust Fund in his memory to help youth sports groups.

In the past 18 months the trust has given up to £500 each to five youth groups and Mrs Waycott, of Kington Langley, wants other groups to apply for funding.

She said: “I’m really thrilled we are helping young people get into sport.

“I think Tim would be really, really supportive and impressed. He would love the fact we are working towards youth sports development. I think he would be really quite honoured.

“He always wanted to see the younger generation involved in sport.”

Groups that received funding include Chippenham Vibes Cheerleading Squad, which bought training mats.

The trust also gave donations to Chippenham Rugby Club for a match kit for the girls’ team; Chippenham Junior Golf Club to purchase equipment to encourage six to 11-year-olds to take up the sport; Chippenham Amateur Swimming Association to train ten volunteers; and North Wiltshire Girl Guides’ Mountaineering section towards an expedition to India.

Mrs Waycott’s son, Tom, 16, has his father’s passion for sport and is junior captain at Chippenham Golf Club.

Tom, who is studying PE and politics at Hardenhuish School, hopes to pursue a golf career as a PGA coach.

Mrs Waycott, pastoral manager at Hardenhuish School, said: “Tim would be immensely proud of what Tom has achieved. Tom and a friend organised a dance show at school to raise money for the trust.”

Mrs Waycott thanked Chippenham Rotary Club for holding a fashion show that raised £600 for the trust.
