THE mother of a seven-year-old boy killed in a rush-hour road accident returned to the scene of the tragedy the morning after.

Pedestrian Tyrese Hannah died after being struck by a car in Drove Road on Friday evening.

Flowers and tributes were placed on a lamp-post at the spot where the accident happened.

Among them was a cuddly toy with a note attached to it.

It read: "My sweet baby Tyrese. Please come home, mummy is waiting for you. Come back to see me and give me a cuddle. Love Mummy."

Tyrese, from the Old Walcot area, was walking with his mother and their two dogs when a male driver lost control and hit a lamp-post, at about 5.45pm.

One of the family's pet dogs was also killed in the collision, 20 metres north from the junction of Belle Vue Road.

The accident was the third serious incident of its kind in the last three months and residents have called for safety measures in Drove Road.

Just last month a motorcyclist was involved in an accident in which his entire bike became wedged underneath a van.

And at the end of last year a disabled man using the pedestrian crossing in Drove Road was hit by a car and needed emergency hospital treatment.

Many people living in the neighbourhood say it was just a matter of time before there was a fatality.

Residents from Cirencester Court, directly opposite the junction where Friday's accident happened, left their condolences and flowers at the scene.

On a card they wrote: "We are all just so sad you had to lose your young life.

"We have tried to save an incident like this by bringing to the attention of the authorities this dangerous road, but no one would listen to us."

The secretary of Cirencester Court management committee, David Peaple, said he was disgusted nothing had been done to improve safety.

"We, as residents of this block of flats, are sick and tired of the carnage and near-misses on this stretch of road and would like something done at once," he said.

"So many accidents happen in this area which do not appear on the statistics because they are not reported to the police.

"Chandler Close is also used by large numbers of schoolchildren and residents and there must be seniors living on Drove Road.

"We are very concerned at the lack of interest exhibited by Swindon Council regarding the traffic problems in this area.

"They have even declined to install a proper pedestrian crossing from which all our residents, retired and some disabled, would benefit."

PC Andrew Stanley of the North Roads Policing Unit at Swindon said Tyrese, who attends an Old Town primary school, died at the Great Western Hospital at about 11pm, after doctors tried in vain to save him.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old from north Swindon, who was not injured in the collision, was arrested at the scene and bailed to appear at Gablecross Police Station at a later date.

Police are still appealing for witnesses, who should contact Sgt Warren Knight or PC Stanley on 0845 408 7000.
