This picture of women taking part in a Young Farmer’s event to elect Miss Wiltshire brought the memories flooding back for Sally Snook (nee Ansty).

She rang in to say she is the young woman pictured fourth from the right in a white dress and hair band. She won the contest and went on to represent Wiltshire in London in the Miss Dairy Queen contest.

“I only managed second in that contest,” she said.

But thanks to Young Farmers she did manage to bag herself a husband. She said: “In those days it is where all the farmers’ daughters went to meet the farmers’ sons and lots of us ended up marrying.”

She married Urchfont farmer Richard Snook and they now live at Easterton.

She grew up in Edington with another girl in the picture Sharon Larkin, first left, and they both went to St Monica’s School in Warminster (now Warminster School).

Mrs Snook said: “Young Farmers was huge fun in those days.”

Marian Ash called in response to our story on the Top Twenty in Chippenham.

Mrs Ash, who was born in Chippenham, used to go every week to the night club.

“It was brilliant,” she said. “Every Saturday we’d have a bath, and then go to the Top Twenty.

“We saw Lulu, The Kinks and The Who and watched Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages set fire to the stage.

“I got Lulu’s signature, but then I lost it after I got divorced.

“In those days Chippenham had good top artists. It was brilliant. Chippenham is as dead as a dodo now.”
