MORE than 1,800 people turned up to Day of the Daleks at Calne Library, on Saturday to see life-size replicas from Dr Who.

The day involved interactive reading and children could create their own cut-and-stick Tardis.

Dr Who fans also had the opportunity to meet life-size characters including three Daleks, Davros, a cyber man, K-9 and a Tardis outside of the library.

Jessica Philips, 28, a librarian and Jenny Wilcockson the library supervisor organised the day that was from 10am to 3pm.

The event was hosted to celebrate the National Year of Reading, which launched at the beginning of April.

Mrs Philips said: "The day was a great success and the turn out was fabulous. On a normal Saturday we have about 350 people coming through our doors so the turn out was excellent.

"It put us on the map, in fact it put us on Youtube, many people video-ed the event and uploaded it to Youtube for other Dr Who fans to see.

"We also have many lovely comments in our visitors book."

The day was one to remember with fans talking to the Daleks who moved around the building and headed off to Sainsburys at one point.

Paula Neate, of Devizes, visited the event and commented: "We attended the day and there was a fantastic atmosphere. My kids really enjoyed it and so did I. I think this is the sort of event that this building should be used. Thank you to everyone who organised the event."

The day was also an opportunity for people to dress up as their favourite Doctor Who character.

Mrs Philips said: "A lot of people dressed as David Tenant, Doctor Who, the current doctor and I dressed up as Peter Davison, the fifth doctor.

"We are really looking forward to future reading events and activity days, Saturday's success was great. It was a great time for families to spend together."

The library staff hope to launch more activity days in the near future to draw more people in to see what Calne Library has to offer.
