WILTSHIRE Council is investigating whether new safety measures are needed at an accident blackspot where a pedestrian was killed this month.

Residents living at the intersection of Studley Lane and the A4, between Calne and Chippenham near Derry Hill, expressed concerns about the safety of the road after a man in his 80s was involved in a fatal collision with a car on February 6.

The road has seen several incidents in the last year alone and many locals believe the current speed of the A4 should be reduced to increase safety.

The council have now revealed they recently carried out a traffic speed assessment in the area, after the parish council raised concerns, and will decide whether new safety measures are necessary in March.

Cllr Caroline Thomas, cabinet member for transport, said: “I can confirm a traffic speed assessment on this stretch of road has recently been carried out on behalf of Wiltshire Council at the request of Calne Without Parish Council, which has also engaged an external consultant to look at the concerns.

“We will be meeting with the parish council in March to discuss the findings and suggestions, and officers will then work with the Local Highway and Footway improvement Group to consider any proposed measures for implementation.

“The safety of all road users in Wiltshire is a priority for us.”

Cllr Thomas also urged people not to speculate about the cause of the most recent incident.

She added: “We are very sad to hear of this fatal collision at the Studley Lane and A4 intersection, and our thoughts go to the family and friends of the deceased gentleman at this difficult time.

“There is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of this incident and, while I appreciate the immediate concerns of local residents, I would encourage people not to speculate as to its causes until this has been completed.”

Multiple Studley Lane residents say they wrote to the council requesting a lowering of the speed limit, to 30mph in the residential area, prior to the assessment.

Others have called for traffic calming measures like traffic lights or even the installation of a roundabout.

They are concerned about the safety of pedestrians crossing the road because of people “driving too fast.”

A mother living adjacent to Studley Lane said: “There definitely needs to be something done to make the road safer, whether that is lowering the speed limit or putting in lights.

“I’m bringing up a little one and there are plenty of kids who use that crossing.”
